How To Register As Self-Employed

  • Do you have a business and earned more than £1000 in this tax year (April to end March) with your business?
  • Are you freelancing and earned more than £1000 in this tax year (April to end March) with your freelancing?
  • Do you have a blog and earned more than £1000 in this tax year (April to end March) with your blog?

Then you need to register as self-employed and a sole trader with HMRC.

(Link correct at time of publishing. If the link doesn’t work, search for ‘register as sole trader’)

Check these to make sure your registration worked:

  • You receive your Unique Tax Reference (UTR) (identifies you within HMRC’s system)
  • You’re registered for Self Assessment Online and receive your activation code (so you can do your sole trader tax return/self assessment)
  • You’re registered for Class 2 National Insurance

That’s it.

Congratulations!
